To Meet New York State Standards

 

The Prevention Is Primary curriculum features lessons that employ a variety of teaching techniques and strategies, such as cooperative learning groups, small group activities, hands-on activities, and role play, in order to meet the needs of the audience.  The PIP Prevention Educators have created lessons that reinforce the New York State Standards that teachers are focusing on in their classrooms.

 

Standard 1:

Language for Information and Understanding

 

The PIP curriculum encourages students to:

¨       interpret information by asking appropriate questions,

¨       asking specific questions to clarify and extend meaning,

¨       use information used in a story to analyze characterization,

¨       listen to acquire information,

¨       participate in large and small group discussions and activities

¨       produce a brief summary of text, by using appropriate vocabulary, proper grammar,

          punctuation and spelling skills.

 

 

Standard 2:

Language for Literary Response and Expression

 

The PIP curriculum encourages students to:

¨       comprehend and interpret text, as well as relate the text to personal experiences

¨       read aloud appropriate text using phonics, and context clues to determine

          pronunciation and meaning

¨       respond to plot and character

¨       create a personal response to the plot and ideas in a story

¨       put themselves in the main character’s place and explain their feelings and responses to a story

 

 

Standard 3:

Language for Critical Analysis and Evaluation

 

The PIP curriculum encourages students to:

¨       read and form opinions about persuasive texts,

¨       express and support opinions

¨       discuss possible consequences and make final choice

 

 

Standard 4:

Language for Social Interaction

 

The PIP curriculum encourages students to:

¨       participate, listen and speak during group discussions at appropriate times,

¨       participate in cooperative learning groups,

¨       voice opinions and listen to classmates’ opinions

¨       solve problems in group settings.
