Summer “Extreme” Camps Expanded
Last summer, Prevention Is Primary (PIP) took its program to a whole new level with the creation of “Extreme PIP,” a week-long day camp opportunity for 4th and 5th grade student leaders that took place at South Buffalo Charter School and Alden Intermediate School. Nearly twenty students completed leadership and team-building exercises and planned projects they would implement in the following school year to encourage healthy behaviors among their fellow students.
The Extreme PIP students had a very busy year. After introductory assemblies that introduced them as role models to the rest of their schools, the students facilitated several awareness campaigns ranging from the drug-free messages of Red Ribbon Week to tips to avoid getting sick during the cold and flu season to addressing bullying. School public address announcements, posters, and organized activities were used to convey the messages of each campaign.
This summer, new teams of “Extreme PIP” fourth and fifth graders will be trained in camps at South Buffalo Charter School (July 18-22), Alden Intermediate School (August 1-5), and Grand Island (August 22-26). In addition, “Extreme” camps for middle school students will also take place at Grand Island (August 15-19) and Depew (August 22-26). All PIP and Teenfocus prevention specialists will participate in order to make facilitation of these five camps possible. Through these camps, it is expected that fifty to seventy-five new student leaders will be prepared to positively impact the environments of their respective buildings throughout the coming school year.
