National Red Ribbon Week Sends a Strong Message

In 1985, Federal DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was kidnapped, tortured, and killed by drug traffickers.  Soon after his death, residents of Agent Camarena’s home town of Calexico, California began wearing red ribbons in honor of his memory.  Over time, the red ribbon has come to symbolize a commitment to remaining free of the abuse of illegal drugs in addition to remembering Agent Camarena.

National “Red Ribbon Week,” which takes place each year during the last week of October, is the most visible time of year for substance abuse prevention efforts.  People from all walks of life will participate by wearing red ribbons and clothing, decorating public buildings and streets, and holding special events.

People, especially adolescents, have a need to feel “normal,” whatever “normal” might be.  Statistics routinely show us that most Americans do not engage in the abuse of illegal drugs, yet a belief that “everybody does it” still persists.  That false notion is very destructive to the overall prevention effort.  When one wears a red ribbon, one demonstrates his or her stance on this issue without having to say a word.  The more people that participate, the louder the message to young people that staying drug-free is “normal” and right.

This year, Preventionfocus will join WNY United and other local substance abuse prevention organizations in observing five theme days during red ribbon week.

“Wear Red Day” – Monday, October 24 – Wear as much red as possible!

“Team Up Against Drugs Day” – Tuesday, October 25 – Wear your favorite sports jersey along with a red ribbon to show we’re all on the same team!

“Take a Stand Day” – Wednesday, October 26 – Sign a pledge to stay drug-free!

“Recognize Role Models Day” – Thursday, October 27 – Thank a role model in your life by giving them a red ribbon!

“Drugs Are Scary Day” – Friday, October 28 – Add the red ribbon theme to your Halloween decorating or parties!

Preventionfocus encourages everyone to use these activities to show how you feel about drug abuse and as conversation starters with young people you care about.  Children and adolescents need to know that adults they trust expect them to stay drug-free.  Use Red Ribbon Week to get that important message across.
